Why else should I stay in shape and not gain weight?

1 Jan

We’ve all heard it and read it all over the place: avoid illnesses, live longer, avoid cholesterol, avoid diabetes, avoid diseases, look good, meet the girl/guy of your dreams .., etc.

There is a reason why the above incentives are always repeated. They are important!

But sometimes, even something as important as living a long life can become insignificant. This is just the nature of people: if you hear it enough times, your brain will learn to ignore it. Reading about all the health risks associated with obesity becomes insignificant when you’re reading it for the 50th time.

It is very important to feel comfortable in your own skin, so if you do then what I am about to say will not be relevant to you.

I am not in any way implying that I am in good shape. If anything, I would say I’m a little on the chubby side.

Now here are some other (much less important) reasons to stay fit that you don’t hear every day:

  1. Ironing those large shirts: Today I offered to iron my dad’s shirt for him because he was in a hurry and needed to get ready. Now I’ve ironed [mostly my] clothes before and it’s usually an easy job, especially if you use an ironing board like I do. My father is a big guy and my not-too-bad ironing skills did not suffice. The shirt was all over the place, I could not even fit one side comfortably on the ironing board. Long story short, ironing those clothes can take half as much time if you get in shape!
  2. Finding that perfect pair of jeans: I think I speak for most people when I say jeans are probably the hardest piece of clothing to shop for. I’ve gone shopping with my skinny and fit friends and on them, any pair of jeans looks good. They can be as picky as they want about price, colour, brand name, and more. For us less fortunate people, our bodies dictate how much we are going to pay for jeans, what colours are available, what brand names actually fit nicely, and how much time we have to spend before finding the right pair! So, losing weight will save you time and money and allow you to be picky when buying jeans.
  3. Feel free to eat that last piece of cake: Now I’d like to think that nobody is judging me when I take the last piece of dessert left at a potluck. While that may be true, I still judge myself and feel pretty bad. I end up beating myself up and wishing I hadn’t taken that bite of cheese cake! (but it is so yummy!)
  4. Be flexible: And not just physically. When all your friends are trying to squeeze into a car for a snack at 2 in the morning, don’t feel awkward and tell them to go without you. When all your friends want to go for a quick game of basketball, say YES. Skydiving? YES. Shopping? YES. Beach? yes yes yes. Say yes without hesitating or feeling awkward.

Again, it is very important to feel comfortable in your own skin. And if you do that is perfect. But for me, I tend to beat myself up every time my friends want to go to the beach, every time I go shopping, and every time I enjoy a yummy meal!
